Author: Nicholas Anderson
She turns from a treble to a sopranino recorder for a showy Sonata in E major by Johann Christian Schickhardt—a German contemporary of Bach and Handel whose chamber music enjoyed popularity beyond his native country. This work is in the form of a six-movement 'sonata da camera'. The music is attractive and it is not difficult to see why it was frequently published during his lifetime. The performance is characteristically lively with not a note either out of a place or out of tune. Twelve minutes is quite a stretch of 'sopranino' timbre, however diverting the music, so I was ready for the drop in pitch and tonality that came with Telemann's Partita in E flat. It belongs to a diverting publication of six such works for a choice of melody instruments, printed in Frankfurt in 1716. This one works especially well on an oboe, but Petri makes out a strong case for recorder; I felt that the tempo di ciaconna was too laboured, too unrelenting, but elsewhere her playing conveyed the simple good humour of the music with many pleasing embellishments.
The Handel sonata was written for transverse flute and continuo but it works reasonably well on the recorder, indeed, more so than the Bach; but I feel that a flute more convincingly conveys the character of the music. The remaining piece is a dazzling sonata by Frederick the Great. I imagine it was originally for the monarch's own instrument, the flute, but it does seem idiomatically well suited to the descant recorder. Petri gives a splendid performance which should captivate most listeners.
To sum up, a diverting compendium of recorder virtuosity; but why no continuo cello? There is not a work here that would not have benefited from one. George Malcolm provides his customarily inventive accompaniment with varied registrations but the absence of a bass stringed instrument gives an air of deshabille.'
