This, as I wrote in my review of the LP, is a marvellous recording of a very great musician, still at the height of his powers and playing like an angel, especially in the hushed introspection of the slow movement in which he is wonderfully well matched by the orchestra and Ozawa. But I see that I then ended by commenting on the excessive price of the LP (at that time £8.80). However, as you will see, the CD is nearly £17. So here we have a version of the Emperor Concerto that lasts 40'54''—that means that about one third of this CD is 'empty' so to speak and could have been filled with, say, a Beethoven overture. In the circumstances, it is difficult to recommend investment in a performance, superb though it is, that costs so much.'
