Following the pattern of earlier volumes in his complete Brahms Lied edition, Graham Johnson has again mapped a more-or-less chronological journey through the composer’s career that juxtaposes the familiar (including the world’s best-loved cradle song) with rarities like ‘Die Schale der Vergessenheit’ and ‘Sehnsucht’, both quintessentially Brahmsian in their mingled passion and resignation. Inevitably in an all-Brahms recital, moods of reflectiveness, longing and regret for lost love or childhood innocence predominate. But Johnson is careful to leaven the mix, not least in some of the folksong settings that frame the recital. There are even moments of Brahmsian playfulness, on the face of it an oxymoron: say, in ‘Ständchen’, a teasing Ländler serenade, or the ebullient avian trifle ‘Auf dem Schiffe’.

Little known in Britain, 26-year-old tenor Simon Bode has been winning plaudits in Mozart and as a Lieder recitalist in his native Germany, with good reason. His tone is sweet and gently rounded, his diction crystal-clear, his phrasing always thoughtful. Spinning a rapt, sustained line, he movingly catches the Brahmsian twilit melancholy of ‘Abenddämmerung’ and ‘In Waldeseinsamkeit’, abetted by Johnson’s ever-sensitive response to harmonic flux. The haunting and little-known ‘Lerchensgesang’ brings one of the loveliest performances, Bode floating ethereally above Johnson’s diaphanous accompaniment. ‘Wiegenlied’, too, is as dulcet as you could wish, with singer and pianist vindicating a provocatively slumbrous tempo.

Occasionally, as in ‘Sehnsucht’ or ‘Am Sonntag Morgen’, Bode’s high notes can acquire a raw, reedy edge that, oddly, called to mind Peter Pears. Perhaps inevitably, too, with such a young singer, not every song seems to engage his full imagination: ‘An eine Äolsharfe’, for instance, is pleasantly sung but lacks an aching intensity of legato and a specific response to its sweet-sorrowful moods. But there is far more to enjoy than to cavil at here, not least in Bode’s spontaneous freshness in the folksong settings, culminating in the tender, touching simplicity of ‘Es steht ein Lind’. I hardly need add that Johnson’s booklet-notes are as discerning and illuminating as his playing.
