Author: David Fallows
Esther Lamandier sings them unaccompanied, in line with current thought on the matter. She also sings them complete apart from a few stanzas in the two longer poems of Audefroi which she speaks (and apart from a line in Bele Ydoine which the editor carelessly cut out). She sings without imposing any embellishments on the musical text, but uses a decorative style that turns the neumatic phrases into scintillating runs and gives a florid declamatory style to the music. She avoids overt drama in her presentation, rather allowing the poems to tell their own story. Briefly, it is an astonishing achievement: her voice never tires or loses its concentration; purely because it is so controlled, her singing of these long strophic poems maintains its vitality for the ear.
The album includes full texts (which are very necessary) as well as full translations into modern French and three introductory essays by eminent scholars: Jean Maillard on the music; Gaston Zink on the language; and Michel Zink on the poetry. For anyone with an interest in early French literature or in the monophonic song tradition, I would think that this record is a required purchase and a landmark.'
