Sir George Dyson's Symphony, composed in 1937, was still heard in the 1940s. Christopher Palmer in his excellent note for this Chandos disc tells us how Felix Aprahamian took Ansermet to hear it at a performance in Southwark Cathedral. Since then it has been forgotten, with, I am afraid, some justification. Its finest movement is the third, an attractively inventive set of variations (in which Ansermet justly found an affinity with ballet music). The first movement, marked Energico sets off with a fair momentum but then flags and fails to sustain its initial impetus. It is a bit too long for its material which does not really catch the ear.
The charming second movement Andante is more engaging but rather slight and must have initially put the association with ballet music into Ansermet's receptive ears. The finale is more confident, drawing on material from The Canterbury Pilgrims and the scoring for the brass is very telling. If one does not expect too much power and symphonic cogency the work is enjoyable enough. It is very well played here and Chandos's resonant and full-bodied recording certainly gives it substance.'
