There is a lot to be said for exercising the right to silence when it comes to less-than-excellent records (or transfers of records) by a particularly well-loved singer. Dearly as I prize Elisabeth Schumann, I don’t really want to hear her pre-electricals, and the fact that originals are very rare need not of itself make Preiser’s collection of them irresistibly attractive. Only one would I bring out to play from choice, and that is the scene of Gretel’s awakening, a charming performance in all respects and one she did not repeat in the studios. Likewise, I would resist hearing her electrical Don Giovanni and Le nozze di Figaro arias in such sandpapery transfers as are found in the Romophone collection. These are lovely and important recordings, and for them on CD I would go for preference to another Preiser (6/91).
Now, it must be emphasized that these are personal opinions and I fully admit that other views may prevail. For instance, it could be said that the pre-electricals claim interest as they include the Jewel song from Faust, Marcelline’s song in Fidelio and two arias apiece from Mignon and Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail, also unrepeated later and sung in a voice which is at any rate delightfully fresh. The Romophone disc contains more than the Mozart arias, and some operetta items from the 1930s are much more difficult to find on originals than one might think. The famous Schumann whistle graces several of these (not, however, varying its repertoire much), and they include both German and English versions of the song from Zeller’s Der Vogelhandler. Also, it must be said that the method of transfer which (to my ears) deals unkindly with the Mozart recordings, does extremely well with the two from Die Fledermaus. So (the reader has a right to ask) what do I recommend? Put both discs, I would suggest, on the list for consideration, but perhaps not very high up.JBS
