An attractive collection of encores celebrating the acoustics of Detroit's Orchestra Hall, made famous by the Mercury engineers during Paray's era with the orchestra in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The resonant warmth is particularly kind to the strings and the rich bass line is here firm and well defined. There is some delightfully elegant violin playing in the Sibelius Andante festivo and especially Glinka's Valse-fantaisie, which Jarvi handles with affectionate finesse. Altogether this is an entertaining and tuneful programme, perhaps leaning a little too much toward slow pieces, although the Chabrier Fete polonaise and the closing Stars and Stripes Forever are as brilliant as you could wish—indeed the Chabrier is a shade hard driven. Glinka's simple variations on Kamarinskaya are the archetypal Russian orchestral piece—all Russian orchestral music owes something to them, not least the finale of Tchaikovsky's Little Russian Symphony. Bolzoni's Minuetto is a real charmer and the famous Dvorak Humoresque is delightfully fresh.'
