A totally delightful programme, beautifully sung, superlatively well-played. It makes a captivating start with So we'll go no more a-roving, the soprano taking her high notes with easy accuracy of placing, the pianist setting the dreamy mood and feeling the changing pulse of the song with his customary sure sensitivity. In Queen Mary's Song he skilfully brings out the suggestion of lute accompaniment, and in Thomas Dunhill's The Cloths of Heaven he achieves a magical effect of half-light, while the pianissmo ''tread softly'', completely pure in tone, makes a lovely ending. The Brahms-like piano part of Love's Philosophy becomes a miracle of greater and lesser lights: none of the generalized arpeggio mush which is sometimes dished up here. Silent Noon, sung and played with gentle, appreciative grace, is perhaps a little too cool at ''Ah! clasp we to our hearts'', and if Dorothy Hogben's song The Shawl is directed to be sung throughout ''in a flat and colourless way'' then that is not quite what we hear—for which on the whole I'm rather glad. The quietude of O waly, waly and Felicity Lott's warmer middle register make this a memorable item; Come you not from Newcastle? rides the bonny bay with a springier pace than usual; and the first of the three Britten songs, Fish in the unruffled lakes, establishes immediately the distinction of this most individual identity among the composers.
Each song, in fact, would bear its comment, but I'll limit myself to three more. Howells's Come sing and dance moves to its full-voiced, full-hearted climax with fine spiritual exultation; Bridge's Go not, happy day is delicious in the clarity and rhythmic buoyancy of its accompaniment as in the assurance of the last sung phrase; and Graham Peel's The Early Morning (''The moon on my one hand'') is liable in its quiet, familiar way to take the emotions by surprise—as indeed in some sense is the whole recital.'
