The flute playing of Peter Lloyd first attracted my admiration on EMI's pioneering 1979 digital recording of orchestral music by Debussy, with Andre Previn and the London Symphony Orchestra, with whom Lloyd has served as principal flute for 25 years (the disc incidentally won Gramophone's Engineering Award that year). That record featured him as solo flautist in the Prelude a l'apres-midi d'un faune, and he conveys similar sensuous and evanescent romanticism here, in this enjoyable collection of French music for flute and piano, in which he is joined by Rebecca Holt.
With the exception of the two sonatas, it must be said that the remaining works are, for the most part, charming but musically insubstantial; though they are certainly no less enjoyable for that. Henri Busser's Prelude et scherzo, for example, adopts the usual bipartite form, with the scherzo being an easy exercise in rhythmic and melodic inconsequence. Much the same could be said of the Caplet and Ferroud items; certainly effective in a limited context, but finally rather unfulfilling. Faure's Fantaisie, too, occupies similar territory, but in common with the Romance by Saint-Saens, its actual melodic worth places it on a somewhat higher plane.
Lloyd gives a superb performance of the Poulenc Sonata, easily the finest music on this disc, and reveals the more sinister undercurrents and restrained drama of this work to great effect, whilst the less-involving Gaubert Sonata, which opens this recital, is just as effectively presented. Albert Roussel's Andante et scherzo returns to the sort of familiar languor which is so very typical of this repertoire, but will certainly appeal in a reading of great sensitivity. Peter Lloyd and Rebecca Holt have been excellently recorded in the warm acoustic of London's Henry Wood Hall, an ideal venue for a production of this kind, and the technical accomplishments of the playing may be taken for granted.'
