The first volume of three Gershwin piano rolls (Nonesuch, 4/94) was a sensation, bringing his magnificent tunes to life from his own piano rolls stunningly realized on the Yamaha Disklavier. If that volume was more of a revelation than this one, it is largely because it consisted entirely of Gershwin’s own incomparable tunes. Most of his rolls were of popular songs of the day, rushed out to cash in on a hit. But there are some curiosities here and two numbers by Gershwin himself.
The first of these is Rialto Ripples, a catchy rag Gershwin wrote in collaboration with Will Donaldson and put on to a roll in September 1916. At one time the piece was unknown, but there are now four recordings on CD and it is fascinating to compare Gershwin’s own 1916 performance with the sheet music published a year later. The roll has much more of the ragtime idiom in oom-pah left-hand chords and even reveals a few misprints in the score. Another ragtime connection is the 1916 roll, under one of Gershwin’s pseudonyms, of Pastime Rag No. 3, one of only five polished rags in different styles by black composer Artie Matthews. Again there are interesting differences between the sheet music published in the same year and Gershwin’s roll – he doesn’t play repeats but he returns to the A strain at the end. He doesn’t seem to know what to do with the “stoptime” effect (1'21'') in Strain C and just holds the pedal down.
The rest of the song arrangements, which sometimes employ two players, show the ragtime background of this piano style, especially in the earlier rolls. These are also good examples of the techniques of the roll arrangers, who hyped it all up by adding notes to create the effect of a whole team of pianists.
It is excellent to have more of Gershwin’s rolls on CD, but why so few? He recorded over 130, but whereas Vol. 1 was 61 minutes this one is only 42. This is the only disappointment: much wants more.'
