While we know Frick best as a supreme interpreter of the nasties in Wagner – and we here have his excellent 1959 accounts of Hagen’s big solos as proof – he was not so familiar in this country in the classic buffo parts of German opera: as Nicolai’s Falstaff, Flotow’s Plunkett, Cornelius’s Abul Hassan and Lortzing’s Van Bett (“O sancta justitia”), Frick has a high old time dispensing humour, anger and intrigue, and as Kecal in The bartered bride he and the exemplary Rudolf Schock as Jenik sing their famous duet as to the manner born, wrong language notwithstanding. His other partners are just as admirable – the young Fischer-Dieskau in the Ford/Falstaff “In einem Waschkorb?” duet and Wunderlich as Lionel in the Martha piece. The final track is Colline’s Coat song, given the most soulful reading you could want.
Most of the recordings date from the mid-1950s, when the singer was in his forties, and at the peak of his form, though the later ones show little decline in Frick’s power. The listing of items mysteriously places Basilio’s Slander song (another tour de force) in Act 2 rather than Act 1 of Barbiere and no tenor is credited in the Boheme item. The transfers are faultless.'
