The names of the composers (and most of their works in this programme) are familiar, but those of the performers are not—except perhaps in their own country. There is little original guitar music here: Sor's L'Encouragement, a staple of the repertory, has two other versions on CD, and Kleyn-jans's Trois climats are agreeably romantic miniatures with jazz-flavoured harmonies—and there you have it. The Spanish pieces (Albeniz, Falla and Granados) are old friends of the guitar (and multiples thereof) in concert and on disc. As is so often the case, one might be pardoned for wondering whether the guitar-duo medium has a substantial repertory of its own—and of course it has.
Kropat and Krumeich play with intelligence, well-shaped phrasing, attractive tone and (for the most part) are well synchronized; animation is, however, in somewhat short supply, especially in the Sor, and in the ever-so-careful ''Danza espa-nola,'' No. 1 from La vida breve, the energetically attacked chords do not compensate for a lack of genuine fire. A duo that wish to introduce themselves to their wider public need to show rather more initiative than this, largely a trip down well-trodden 'touristic' paths, and to inject a little more variety of pace into the proceedings. Whether they have the reserves of technique to do the latter is another question, over which the ambling pace of the final movement of L'Encouragement and the descending run in the Danza (like a fat man running down stairs) cast a tiny doubt. All in all it is a pleasant and well-engineered (complete with a few finger squeaks) recording, but a far from arresting or inspired one.'
