Author:
The fantasies of Byrd, Bull, Gibbons and William Lawes form the mainstay of this release; Fretwork are outstanding in those of Bull and Lawes, but Gibbons's is a delight for the inclusion of a 'Great Dooble Base' (here ably played by William Hunt, though one might have wished for a little more volume from it). Particularly fine are the subtle and elegant transitions of tempo and affect they make from one section to the next. But even more pleasing is their sound, which is at once colourfully resonant and yet perfectly transparent to the ear. As on the previous CD, the treble playing is outstanding: confident, sweet and shapely.
Of the rest, the Almains and Coranto are sprightly and full of fun, the Pavans are stately and lyrical, the Galliards less characterized; underlying all the dances is a deft sense of tempo and cross-rhythm. Fretwork continue their exploration of the In Nomine with serene selections by Ferrabosco the Elder and Gibbons. Lawes's virtuoso dances for two division viols and organ are very well executed and followed by an organ fancie, played by Paul Nicholson, from My Ladye Nevells Booke, which also ends in a blaze of ornamentation. Christopher Wilson also deserves praise for his incisive lute accompaniments to the dances, especially Dowland's
This—more than the previous CD—is for everyone who even vaguely thinks they might enjoy English consort music. Popular tunes abound, cunningly woven into the characteristic contrapuntal textures. Fretwork plainly enjoy playing this repertory and look set to popularize it as never before.'
