Holborne’s music is, like that of Dowland, distinctive, skilful in counterpoint, and inclined to introspection. Jacob Heringman offers a splendid cross-section of Holborne’s plucked-string music, eloquently played on three different instruments – lute, bandura and cittern – and is warmly recorded. I regret only that its 27 tracks do not include The Countess of Pembroke’s Funeral and Paradise, two of Holborne’s most beautiful works, but this in no way deters me from giving the strongest recommendation to this enterprising and long-overdue tribute.'
