The Musicians of Swanne Alley have been on to a good thing from the start. The Folger Consort and other American ensembles like them who also concentrate on late sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century English repertory, have never gained the international acclaim that this group have earned over the past 13 years under the able direction of lutenists Lyle Nordstrom (who is largely responsible for the editions they use) and Paul O'Dette (who also pursues a flourishing solo career). To their violin, lutes (as well as pandora and cittern), recorders, soprano flute and viols the five-strong ensemble are joined here by Emily Van Evera.
As with previous recordings, this one resembles a concert performance—polished, coherent and cleverly contrived so that everyone is allowed to shine. Thus we are treated to solos and duets as well as varied and finely-wrought mixed ensembles of voice, flute, violin, lute and viol in which the Musicians take turns (rather like modern-day jazzmen) as soloists, plying their divisions, discantists and refrain instrumentalists. Among the high points are the virtuoso fiddling of David Douglass in the anonymous Stingo (and elsewhere), the sparkling plucked duets, the ballad My Lord Willoghbies welcome home, and the stylish ensemble rendition of the evergreen Greensleeves.
Though undeniably lovely, Van Evera's bright soprano voice can occasionally overwhelm (as in Care charminge Sleepe and the ground-bass air O Deathe, rock me a sleepe) and she seems more at home in Pagginton's Pound—though her Cockney accent sometimes fails her—and most especially in My Lord Willoghbies welcome home, which she sings with verve and conviction.'
