Author: John Duarte
Saverio Mercadante (1795-1870) enjoyed a high reputation as a composer of operas, of which he wrote 60, but it declined after his death and until recently he had a relatively small foothold in The Classical Catalogue, based for the most part on his vocal music. Nevertheless, he wrote a good deal of instrumental music, including six flute concertos, three of which Galway recorded in 1987 and are now re-released with a different cover photo. Each consists of three 'instrumental operatic scenes', to which you might pass a few pleasant evenings writing your own libretti. Mercadante, extolled by Rossini and overshadowed by Verdi, had the attractive fluency of line and clarity of form of his distinguished contemporaries—and he wrote beautifully for the flute, sufficient to earn him a place on most collectors' shelves.
Galway plays with his accustomed silver-tongued panache and has the benefit of the co-operation of both I Solisti Veneti and the recording engineers at their best. To those for whom one concerto might seem an adequate dipping of the toe in Mercadante's water I warmly recommend Irena Grafenauer's rather more subtly nuanced version of the E minor work in a mixed programme.'
