Author: Andrew Lamb
All are self-contained short items, essentially representing Heifetz in “lollipop” mode. Many are arrangements of the likes of Debussy, Ravel, Stephen Foster, Gershwin, and other classical composers. Others are trifles that are little known today – and all the more welcome for that. Apart from a cringe-inducing arrangement of Berlin’s White Christmas with Salvatore Camarata and his orchestra, it’s impressive stuff. Heifetz’s playing exudes beauty of tone, a striking range of light and shade, depths of emotion, and dazzling virtuosity. Not least there are the glorious flights of fancy, as in the arrangements of Rossini’s “Largo al factotum” or Weill’s “Mack the Knife”.
The recordings were all included in RCA’s “Heifetz Collection” (11/94); but they’re more sensibly arranged here. They come in matrix order, from the earliest tracks in October 1944 to the final Jocelyn “Berceuse” and “Where my caravan has rested’, recorded in July 1946 with Heifetz and the Victor Young Orchestra accompanying Bing Crosby. An appended brief piano solo of Heifetz in a popular song of his own composition provides a little added interest. There’s timeless artistry here, and the astonishing immediacy of the transfers, for which DG have added “discreet stereo ambience”, makes nonsense of the age of the recordings.
