The RADA-style diction, the distinctive timbre, the irony implied by a phrase spoken here and there, the whisper to give a smile to a word: Julie Andrews's technique and style are still there to delight. Has age taken its toll on the line and added a bit more of a beat to the tone, especially on high notes? It cannot be denied, but after a career spanning more than 40 years, she can give a lesson in putting over a song to anyone exploring this repertory.
''That was quite adequate'' was Richard Rodgers's teasing verdict when she auditioned for him in 1955. He didn't give her the role in Pipe Dream that she was trying for—instead he advised her to go down the road and sing for Lerner and Loewe, who were planning My Fair Lady. Rodgers didn't forget her, though, and he and Hammerstein wrote Cinderella for Julie Andrews, which she created on television live in 1957. Later came the film of The Sound of Music, and as ES says in his affectionate interview in the CD booklet, ''the rest is history''.
Since her recording of The King and I (Philips, 10/92), Julie Andrews has returned to the stage in the Sondheim revue Putting It Together (RCA, 7/94), and she is clearly trying to develop a more mezzo-ish diseuse style of delivery. It suits her better now, and the best things on this recital are her performances of ''Where or when'' from Babes in Arms and ''Nobody told me'' from No Strings.
A ''Waltz Carousel'' medley is a nice touch—Rodgers is certainly the waltz-king of the twentieth century. The piece exposes more of a strain on the voice here and there, but ends with a fine, sustained pianissimo at the conclusion of ''This nearly was mine''.
For those who have never succumbed to Julie Andrews's charm, it's probably too late to start now, and this isn't the disc to attempt to convert the cynics. For the rest, here she is, the greatest trouper, with the composer closest to her heart, giving her all for Rodgers, and equally to Hammerstein and Hart.'
