Erb's career, voice and style closely resemble those of Peter Schreier today. Both started their professional life in the opera house and made opera recordings, both became great interpreters of Palestrina in Pfitzner's opera of that name and the role of the Evangelist in the Bach Passions, both seemed destined to become Lieder interpreters of note in their maturity. And so it proved. Then, their voices are uncannily similar in timbre, for they possess a tone of strange, plangent beauty that can on the other hand sound a shade piercing and uncomfortable.
As a Lieder singer on disc, Erb came to prominence later in his career than Schreier. He was already in his late fifties when he made his long series of records in this field for Electrola, most but by no means all once available in Britain on HMV 78s, many listed in the HMV catalogue in what was then known to collectors as the 'Special List', which is where I first discovered them. Almost all of the first CD is devoted to Erb's Schubert, covering a wide range of the better-known songs. Few, except perhaps for Schreier himself, have come closer to conveying the inner desolation and/or loneliness of such pieces as Wanderers Nachtlied II, Dass sie hier gewesen, ''Der Wegweiser'' and ''Das Wirtshaus'' (the last two making one regret Erb never recorded a complete Winterreise). The piercing, sad quality of tone, the acute accentuation of words are here wholly appropriate. Yet Erb can lighten his voice and manner for such charmers as An Sylvia and Liebesbotschaft.
The second disc in the main comprises Erb's Beethoven, Schumann, Brahms and Wolf. While Beethoven's Adelaide really calls for a sappier voice, it has seldom had such a verbally pointed reading. Some of his Schumann is beyond praise. His intimate, spontaneous readings of such favourites as Meine Rose, Mondnacht and Der Nussbaum sound as if they are newly minted in his hands. The same can be said of Brahms's glorious O wusst' ich doch den Weg zuruck. Again, his reading of Wolf's religious (Morike and Ocana) settings, Schlafendes Jesuskind, Nun wandre Maria and Auf ein altes Bild are touching in their simple, unvarnished beauty. All are held on a thread of perfectly sustained legato. We are about as far away from modern glamour and hype as it's possible to be, alone with a dedicated and wonderful master of the miniature. Bruno Seidler-Winkler, an unobtrusive, musicianly pianist who served German record-making so well for more than 30 years as player and conductor, is Erb's suitable partner. The transfers are excellent.'
