Judging by the photograph in the booklet, Anne Gastinel is quite youthful, yet remarkably, no information about her is provided. She gives thoroughly musical performances of all three works here and is at her finest in the Faure Elegie, which has a disarming natural eloquence. She begins the first movement of the Saint-Saens with plenty of energy and fervour and finds a nice delicacy for the Allegretto. However, she is not helped by the recording which, though it offers her a natural balance, is otherwise undistinguished and produces thick orchestral tuttis for the first movement of the Lalo. In the “Intermezzo” she is delicately songful and her light touch in the charming second part of this movement – an Allegro presto with dainty (if ill-defined) wind decorations – gives pleasure. But in the finale the comparatively opaque sound tends to weigh down the orchestra. Because the recording is too poorly defined I feel I cannot recommend this triptych, particularly at premium price. It is quite extraordinary that a modern digital record should sound so subfusc and one hopes that this talented young cellist will have better luck next time for she is a fine artist.'
