Largely self-taught and the composer of over 200 songs, Peter Erasmus Lange-Muller (1850-1926) completed his incidental music for Holger Drachmann’s fairy-tale comedy Once upon a time in 1886. It is a sweetly melodious creation of great charm, whose concluding “Midsummer Eve Song” has long since entered the Danish nation’s musical bloodstream. The excellent Michael Schonwandt secures playing and singing of real affection and commitment from his admirable forces. Fine, airy sound in this Danish Radio co-production.'
