Author:
I use the word album carefully, for the packaging presents the group as essentially a pop outfit willing to push the boat out. For the most part it works well enough, although quality does vary between tracks. The gene pool is actually among the most successful – tightly structured and well written for the forces to hand. The closing piece, Garland’s marimba picture Apple blossom, stands out for its total reliance on a single 13-note chord, gradually evolving and then dissipating to produce an ethereal effect. I was relatively unstirred by the Daugherty which, despite its sometimes daring juxtaposition of styles, provokes only mild annoyance with its vocal snatches and studio trickery. Recording is studio-bound by design and mostly first-rate, although I found it difficult to separate textures in the later stages of the Hayes. One might crave a more consistently legible (less insistently fashionable) booklet-note to detail the unusual instruments and techniques employed, but this disc seems not to take itself that seriously. Classical music it surely isn’t and those who find the crossover sector unrewarding will doubtless run a mile. Still, there’s no mistaking the virtuosity – and humour – of Ensemble Bash.'
