Tibbett owned one of the most sheerly beautiful baritone voices of the century and he used it, at the peak of his career, chronicled on this invaluable reissue, with the utmost sensitivity that was combined with an outgoing confidence typical of the best American singers of today and yesterday. When he was in his prime, from about 1925 to 1940, he was also a handsome figure, so that his popularity was huge. The very first item, the Pagliacci Prologue, proclaims the ease of his singing the mellow roundness of his tone, the precision and excellence of his diction. The Barbiere and Ballo items, once coupled on a much-admired 78, confirm the command of line and tone throughout a considerable range. Then comes a memento of his Boccanegra, one of his most famous Metropolitan interpretations, showing the portrayal to combine authority and feeling, and we have further evidence (after her Met Donna Anna) of Rose Bampton's fine-grained soprano. Ford was one of Tibbett's first Met successes (he later sang Falstaff), so that the previously unissued account of Ford's monologue, superbly and powerfully delivered, is an important addition to the Tibbett discography.
The solos from Tosca, Carmen and Faust indicate that Tibbett never sacrificed tone for the sake of dramatic impact: everything is achieved within the bounds of the singing verities. The 1934 account of Wotan's Farewell, with Stokowski conducting (and 'arranged' by him), has always been something of a collector's item (it was not long in the catalogue): this music is approached from a pure, bel-canto standpoint, with seamless phrasing yet no want of bite in the attack. Tibbett created the title-role in Emperor Jones and proves how dramatically effective he must have been in this not inconsiderable music. He is even better as Porgy, whose solos have seldom been given with such conviction; Gershwin supervised the sessions himself. As Tibbett sang everything with his whole body and soul, the dividends here are great. But such profligacy may account for his comparatively early decline, he already experienced vocal difficulties in his early forties. The transfers are admirably done: the voice rings out truly and there's virtually no surface noise.'
