Author:
Once they were among not only the most celebrated singers but also the most famous women in the world. Schumann-Heink came to the USA, where at one time she was ‘mother’ to the nation, from Germany where she had sung for Brahms; Sembrich came from Poland, and not only her singing but her playing of piano and violin had been praised by Liszt. She sang in the second night of the opening (1883) season of the Metropolitan, New York, as their first Lucia di Lammermoor; Schumann-Heink sang there last in 1932 at the age of 71. I mention these things now, well aware that most of our readers who consult reviews in this specialist area know it all already, but hoping (and I can hardly say how much) that somebody new to it will give it a try and open the door on this garden of another age. The safe entrance is via one of the males (Caruso most obviously) or a soprano of slightly later date (such as Galli-Curci), but either of these two women here would be more of a challenge, more of an adventure.
In both instances, another part of the experience is a kind of progression. These ten years, 1900-09, are broadly all one in the history of the gramophone, but following chronologically as one does in these editions one clearly hears the year-by-year improvement. Both singers recorded the same titles several times – Schumann-Heink, for instance, has four performances of the Brindisi in
The word ‘complete’ is used of both editions. Has anyone, I wonder, access to Schumann-Heink’s second Zonophone, the spoken “Message from America to their children” (her husband Paul Schumann also taking part)? And what has become of Sembrich’s readily accessible “Bel raggio”? Ward Marston’s transfers are excellent and both issues do credit to the house of Romophone.
