Author:
The sequence of records made in these years is practically all we have of her, and, to tell the truth, it is a pity we have more. Fragments of her singing in the late 1930s in Vienna have survived and tell of a fragmenting voice, recognizably itself at the top of the range, but shallow and even shrewish in the lower part. Of the studio recordings, most famous is her Konigin von Saba, with its climaxes soaring above the women’s chorus and its exotic, perfumed romanticism conspiring to effect a self-induced trance in which the bright gleam of this remarkable voice also plays its part. It is easier to trust the judgement in her Verdi where the Ballo in maschera arias impress deeply, while her “D’amor sul’ali rosee” (Il trovatore) and “O patria mia” (Aida) are among the best of performances on record. Those, unfortunately, have not been included by Pearl in their selection, though they, in turn, have the delightful solo from Die tote Stadt which is not to be found on Preiser. For the rest, as to selection and transfer, there is not much to choose. Pearl’s inclusion of “Martern aller Arten” has less to commend it than one might have hoped (hunt the missing semiquavers is the name of the game there). Neither company has bagged the other aria from Die Entfuhrung (“Ach, ich liebte” – available at one time on Club 99, 1/94) or the Nile duet from Aida with Emil Schipper.
My own choice would be the Preiser disc, principally for the two important Verdi arias; but both collections serve well to illustrate the brilliance which for a while, and at least as far as voice is concerned, lit up the operatic scene in a way experienced by a later generation who heard Ljuba Welitsch.'
