Pleasure at seeing Mozart songs represented in the CD catalogue is severely mitigated by the fact that 88 minutes of music is poor value for two discs and by the Philips decision to issue this import from Japan with only German text and Japanese translations.
Ameling made a previous disc of Mozart songs on Electrola, a record unissued here like the LP equivalent of the CDs under review, which were made as long ago as 1977. Some faults noted on the previous issue seem to have been ironed out. That sadly neglected and quite beautiful song Sei du mein Trost now finds the soprano with no difficulties over its tessitura and Die Alte is far from neutral; indeed, like Roberta Alexander on her Etcetera version (KTC1039—reviewed above), Ameling now adopts an old woman's voice for it, a questionable procedure. Das Veilchen, however, still lacks something in poise.
As a whole I'm not sure that what the French call an integrale is what one wants on a Mozart Lieder issue. Several of the songs, especially the earlier ones, are really rather uninteresting and even some of the maturer ones don't show the composer at has most worthwhile. Ameling and Baldwin certainly do their best to enliven them with their clear articulation and clean rhythms, but they find more inspiration, not unnaturally, for pieces such as An Chloe and Abendempfindung where Mozart is truly Mozart. I admire the way Ameling, with all her experience, aptly varies her tone from the lightness required for, say, Die kleine Spinnerin to the dramatic weight called for the distraught Luise burning her love letters.
The recorded sound is admirably immediate and forward. What we should now have is a single CD of, say, an hour or so including all the outstanding songs and with a properly prepared booklet. It would be a pity if the best of these performances were lost to the catalogues.'
