This is a curious recording‚ whose title (or rather‚ its subtitle‚ ‘Polyphony in a European Perspective’) reveals a distinctly political agenda. It is true that 16thcentury polyphony transcends the political boundaries of the day‚ and that composers like Jean de Castro (the principal composer featured here) wrote in all sorts of genres and crossed national and linguistic boundaries. The proEuropean point being made here is obvious enough (almost too obvious‚ actually); whether it suffices to unite as wideranging and disparate a recital as this one‚ however‚ is quite another matter. There are choral pieces sung by Capilla Flamenca‚ keyboard and other arrangements‚ chant pieces performed by the female vocal ensemble TrigonProject‚ and instrumental performances by Piffaro and More Maiorum. Taken individually‚ there are some fine performances (I especially enjoyed those selections played on the organ)‚ but one would have wished for an overarching‚ purely musical conception to give the whole thing some coherence‚ an overriding character making the whole greater than the sum of its parts. Perhaps the intention is to demonstrate the richness of the Renaissance musical ‘soundscape’ (to use R Murray Schaeffer’s term): a valid conception‚ certainly‚ but then one might query the choice of individual pieces as being insufficiently characterful. De Castro’s threevoice arrangement of Cipriano de Rore’s Ancor che col partire doesn’t tell me anything very interesting about the piece‚ for example. Perhaps I have dwelt unduly on the political point being made here‚ but having some sympathy with it myself‚ I would have welcomed a more spirited defence of it than is made here.
