This marvellous record distils the quintessence of Beecham's art. If you didn't acquire it in its last incarnation (HMV SXLP30299, 2/80), I urge you to do so now. Recently, reviewing current CDs of Bizet's L'Arlesienne incidental music, TH pointed out that Beecham was never above inserting something light in his programmes. Perhaps one of the reasons such music is omitted in most of today's concert programmes is that they are notoriously short, with seldom more than three pieces and sometimes only two. I wonder how many readers find like I do (remembering the length of a typical wartime Promenade concert) that they are poor value. Anyway here are some of the items we seldom hear live today, played marvellously. The exquisite delicacy of the flute and bassoon solos in Le rouet d'Omphale and indeed the rhapsodizing flute melody of Debussy's Cortege et Air de danse are two of many delights which make this record indispensable; or just try the graceful opening of the Dolly suite. Beecham's Prelude a l'apres-midi d'un faune minimizes the sentient quality of the middle section (without losing its rapture), yet in the excerpts from Samson et Dalila he demonstrates what a Bacchanale is all about.
The sound is always good, sometimes a trifle shallow, but its slightly brittle quality is admirable for Chabrier's Marche joyeuse, which has a wonderfully cultivated kind of dash and much geniality.'
