This recording offers the very quintessence of Kathleen Battle: a winsome, childlike readiness of timbre and response, in a light, high, airy soprano, sounding for all the world as if it is about to fly away with the songsters she invokes in her Purcell.
Just as her voice has very definite limits, so does the expressive range of this recital. For the most part, the choice of repertoire is tailored accordingly. The only moments of doubtful choice are in her Strauss songs, where her breadth of phrasing is never quite enough to carry the harmonic weight of the music, and in Faure's Mandoline, just too brisk, too busy for the more allusive, shadowy mysteries of the setting.
This is not the place to look for baroque style, either. Battle's light-floating cantabile, bordering at times on vocalise in miniature, is more at home in Mendelssohn than in Purcell or Handel.
Just the right weight, the ready intimacy is there for the nursery lullaby of Bei der Wiege, the elfin scherzo of Neue Liebe. Neither she nor Mendelssohn takes Heine's shadows too seriously.
There is much to enjoy, too, in Mozart's Veilchen, stepping out, like the shepherdess, ''light of step and gay of heart''; in the rapturous arcs of phrasing with which she shapes Faure's Roses d'Ispahan; and in the ingenuous simplicity, echoed in James Levine's astute piano playing, of her handling of the childlike rhyming couplets of En priere. Although this recording reduces the live audience to total silence, one can almost feel Battle wooing them in her closing negro spirituals, refreshingly unmannered and as vividly present as the recording itself.'
