It is difficult to know quite how seriously to take this disc of Chants sacres, recorded as it is by a French/Swedish team in Stockholm's Conserthuset and sung by an all-American girl, robe de Givenchy, bijoux Ebel (the documentation is rather less thorough on other points).
In a vein of either low-key camp or gently reverent Victorian revivalism, Barbara Hendricks is joined by Erik Lundkvist's wheezy organ for a Bach/Gounod Ave Maria of chaste ardour, then by the Stockholm Chamber Orchestra for a distinctly incense-free Panis angelicus, pure and clear as Scandinavian glass.
After some interminable wanderings in the side-chapels of Stradella and Mascagni, Hendricks permits the Eric Ericson Chamber Choir to come into its own for a surprisingly sprightly Hear my prayer. The choral responses to Hendricks's almost disarming solo are sober and staid. More interesting stylistic dichotemies are to be found in the smouldering flames of the Walesa dedicated ''Lacrimosa'' of Penderecki, and a somewhat perfunctory Lloyd Webber ''Pie Jesu''.
For Bernstein's ''Kaddish II'' and for the spirituals, Hendricks at last seems able to enter into the spirit of things. The former makes finely poised, unforced progress; the latter, in Robert Sund's busky piano arrangements, enable the fingers of Ulf Johansson and the cavernous male voices of the Orphei Drangar to have the time of their lives.'
