From the Langford pieces we move to the slightly more weighty sound world of the late Geoffrey Bush's Divertimento of 1943. This substantial three-movement work can easily rub shoulders with the string music of Elgar, Finzi and Vaughan Williams. Where has it been hiding, and why is it not heard more often? Beautifully structured and brimming with memorable ideas, I guarantee this will be an irresistible discovery to all who hear it.
Geoffrey Wright's charming 'Summer Stream' (from which the disc takes it title) is one of two miniatures for strings and harp, the other being a slightly roguish Irish jig originally composed for Sean O'Casey's playCock-a-doodle Dandy. As we progress to Herbert Sumsion's Graingeresque A mountain tune and David Lyon's Intermezzo (My Fair Lady meets a 'light' Brucknerian landler) we realize that there isn't a weak piece to be heard on this disc. The programme closes with Anthony Hedges's substantial Divertimento for strings (1971), a work 'light' in spirit perhaps, but one that can surely hold its head high in the company of some of our finest string music. The performances, by the Royal Ballet Sinfonia under the direction of David Lloyd-Jones are, like all the music here, a pure delight to the ear. Buy it!'
