This is an attractive recital of transcriptions of favourite Spanish pieces – I hesitate to describe them as ‘lollipops’ as they are more than that, not least the haunting Ravel Pièce en forme de habanera, played here with great élan. The programme opens with Falla’s Suite populaire espagnole in which the fourth movement, ‘Nana’, brings a magical pianissimo, and indeed the lovely ‘Oriental’ of Granados is hardly less memorable, the melodic line wonderfully gentle and flexible. Of course the more robust items, such as the same composer’s ‘Andaluza’, are no less enticing, while Sarasate’s ‘Playera’ has a splendidly sultry underlay. Mischa Maisky demonstrates a natural feeling for this colourful music and in the Albéniz ‘Tango’ his resonant tone is enhanced by the most subtle control of light and shade.

As a contrast, Falla’s Ritual Fire Dance from El Amor brujo is played with great gusto and projection, so that one hardly misses the orchestra at all. The two encores bring a charming Catalan folksong, ‘El cant dels ocells’, arranged by Casals, and a clever pastiche by Shchedrin, In the Style of Albéniz. The latter makes a spectacular end to a recital by this admirably matched father-and-daughter duo, very beautifully recorded in the Bavarian Schloss Elmau. The audience shows its appreciation at the close but is agreeably silent elsewhere.
