Hurrying along at a faster pace than in most of the 13 rival Petrushkas on record (original and 1947 versions—the only other CD is of the original version by the LSO and Abbado on DG 400 042-2, 3/83), Riccardo Muti succeeds in making even the talented Philadelphia musicians sound rushed at times, and at 33'30'' rather short-changes the CD purchaser who might reasonably have looked for a fill-up item. Nevertheless, this feeling of overdrive is experienced only on a complete playback. Selecting individual passages reveals very soon the fantastic capabilities of this fine orchestra, and the recording of the much-heralded ''new Philadelphia sound'' is here so successful as to provide numerous excerpts worthy of hi-fi demonstration.'
