The programme opens with a sparkling and incisive account of Petrushka in the version that served for rehearsals of the ballet and, as Jacobs reminds us in his lively notes, “the version that Stravinsky took around with him and played with different musicians”. All eight performances are enthusiastically recommended. They spill over on to disc 2 which is completed by previously unissued live solo performances by Jacobs. From a 1972 concert come brilliant accounts of Stravinsky’s Four Etudes, Op 7 (try the concluding Vivo). A 1979 concert, with Jacobs’s spoken introductions, is devoted to jazz-influenced 20th-century piano music (Stravinsky, Debussy, Bolcom and Rzewski’s Down by the Riverside, commissioned by Jacobs) as well as Aaron Copland – who is in the audience and briefly interviewed by Jacobs. The two play Copland’s Danzón Cubano for two pianos, under-rehearsed and on wretchedly voiced instruments – the only disappointment (but a major one) on this otherwise impressive release.
