Compared with many Philadelphia recordings of the late seventies this one is warm and natural, with Perlman not so closely balanced as in some of his recordings. The Perlman performance is masterly, with Ormandy a most understanding accompanist, but the Chung version, as well as conveying a more urgently volatile view, opens up quite a different sound world: clearer, brighter and more open with orchestral detail far clearer, yet also warmer too to match the extra tenderness of Chung's reading. The Chung also has a far more generous coupling, the Mendelssohn Concerto against the brief, lyrical Serenade here. The heading above makes it clear that this is an analogue recording digitally remastered, but not the information with the disc—which would leave you with the impression that this is a digital recording.
[Ed—Following EG'S comments above and on page 1264 we queried the use of coding with EMI. They informed us that their new CD releases would carry the letters indicating the type of recording.]'
