This is one of the most sumptuously presented sets ever. Contained in a red cloth slip-case, the 11 CDs, each in an envelope bearing a different protrait of Leontyne Price, are in one volume, while a 236-page book rests beside it, with all the texts and translations, essays, interviews and more portraits. Price describes herself as an “American troubadour”, and to prove her universal appeal, there she is on the last spread, shown with Mr and Mrs Reagan, and then with Mr and Mrs Clinton.
The moment anyone puts a title like “essential” on a disc, or even 11 discs, one’s question is “but what about?” I was surprised that her recital of Broadway show tunes with Andre Previn isn’t included, nor Barber’s Hermit Songs, from the various roles most closely associated with Price, the entrance of Butterfly and the Act 3 duet with Radames from Aida both seem like omissions.
Even the most devoted admirer will ask whether they need to lash out on such a big set. After all, if you are a Price fan you will probably have quite a few of these records already. The selection restores to the catalogue her recital of opera scenes, including Tatyana’s Letter Scene from Eugene Onegin, in Russian, though on stage she sang the part in English. This disc also includes three roles she never sang on stage, Violetta, Leonore in Fidelio and Elisabeth de Valois in Don Carlo. The sleeve-notes for the original issue of this disc were written by Virgil Thomson, no less. He praised Price above all for her “structural understanding”. Reviewing the original LP issue (4/72) Andrew Porter was critical of Cleva’s conducting, and suggested that Price needed someone with more command. This is very noticeable when one leaps from “Abscheulicher!” to “Senza mamma” and then to the “Habanera” from Carmen. (Such haphazard programming is the drawback on all such compilations it seems.) Karajan’s superb rapport with Price drew from her one of her most enduring performances, also of a role she never sang on stage, but one would never guess it.
For those who have already invested in the four-CD set “The Prima Donna Collection” (12/92), it may be comforting to know that of the 120-or-so items in this collection, only ten are taken from those CDs. Of those items that have never been issued before or that are new to the UK, it is especially interesting to hear an extract from a Lieder recital in 1965, with Price in great form in Brahms’s Zigeunerlieder. She is accompanied by David Garvey, who was one of the key people in her career, as she mentions in the light-hearted and touching interview with the late John Pfeiffer that ends the set. Price’s career as a recitalist was under-represented in her recording career and in particular there is hardly anything of her large repertory of American song. If this is just one example of Price recorded live in recital that is lurking in the archives (she gave regular recitals at Salzburg, so there may be some Festspieldokumente) I hope RCA will give us some more, concentrating on American song.
The basic outline of this set begins with four CDs of opera arias, the first naturally devoted to Verdi and the five roles that will always be associated with Price – Aida, Amelia, the two Leonoras and Elvira in Ernani. The Forza arias are taken from the earlier set, conducted by Schippers (the right choice in my opinion), but rather than the extracts from the 1970 Leinsdorf Aida, it might have been interesting to hear the even earlier recital versions under de Fabritiis. From that early disc, her account of “Che il bel sogno di Doretta” from La rondine, shows the voice at its most beautiful, full in the lower range with a soaring, creamy tone on high. The microphone always seemed to highlight a slight ‘catch’ in her voice that wasn’t noticeable in the concert-hall or opera house. Jumping around from composer to composer and ranging over 25 years, these opera arias accentuate the difference in Price’s voice from the free-and-easy days of the 1950s and 1960s to the much more studied, cautious later recordings.
There are two CDs of duets, a glorious Butterfly Act 1 duet with Richard Tucker, incomparable Act 2 Ballo with Bergonzi and the great, dramatic confrontation with Milnes from Act 4 of Trovatore. Yes, one says, these indeed are essential Price. From a live recital at Lincoln Center in the early 1980s come four duets with Marilyn Horne. The occasion was obviously one of great emotion, the curiosity is “Mira, O Norma”. Horne is on safe ground here, Price gets through it, to the audience’s delight. Butterfly, Aida and Cosi fan tutte follow. One would love to have been there, one listens with pleasure, once.
Discs seven and eight are devoted to song. Les nuits d’ete under Fritz Reiner is a famous recording. Reviewing a previous reissue LS complained of Price’s “unchanging dynamics and coloration”. (The cycle was coupled then with Charles Munch’s recording of L’Enfance du Christ, 12/92.) Well, perhaps he has a point, but what tone, what magisterial phrasing, and the dark hues of Price’s low notes bring a great sense of mystery to the end of “Le spectre de la rose”, and then of course her attack on the repeated “Ah! sans amour s’en aller sur la mer!” in “Absence” is thrilling. Listening to this performance, it is a source of regret that Price hardly ever sang in concert in London: how much we missed!
The whole of her first recital disc with David Garvey is included, especially valuable for the Poulenc songs; although the Miroirs brulants are intended for a male voice, Poulenc himself especially admired Price’s performance of them. The Strauss songs from 1959 are beautiful, they rather show up the later performance of the Vier letzte Lieder; the best part of this Strauss recital with Leinsdorf is the Empress’s Awakening Scene. Though in her interview Price says that she doesn’t regret not singing any of the roles she essayed in recital, there is always a feeling of “ah, what might have been”.
Alec Robertson gave the Schumann recital, including Frauenliebe und -leben, a warm welcome on its original issue (8/71). His criticism was mostly concerned with the stress Price places on certain words, and a habit she has of breaking up a phrase with a pause between words. Her voice seems rather too magnificent for the domestic tale – but there is no doubt that she understands this cycle very well, and at the time it was recorded (1969) she was in fantastic vocal form. This record has been unavailable for years, and its inclusion may clinch the question of purchase for the wavering admirer.
The spirituals and hymns are sung with fervour and beauty of tone and line. “They are the expresion of me as an American, of me as a human being,” Price says in her introduction, and when one hears her sing, for instance, a most beautiful unaccompanied Were you there, it is easy to understand. The latest performance on the set is of a favourite song of her mother, This little light o’mine, recorded in January 1991.
Price’s performances and recordings have never roused the controversy that surrounds Callas’s, Schwarzkopf’s or Sutherland’s; she likens herself to a “vocal impressionist … I have colours in [the voice] that I take like a palette”. Staying with this rich and characterful voice for several days, one is impressed again and again by the range of expression and tone she finds. Think of Price, and her Verdi performances naturally come to mind first. Listen to these CDs and what you may be left with is a memory instead of a Schumann song, “Schone Wiege meiner Leiden”, from the Liederkreis, Op. 24, a spiritual or the voluptuous beauty of much of Les nuits d’ete.'
