And what of the young, highly touted Pavao Quartet? Well, they play with satisfactory finesse, intonation is mostly on target and their sound is well blended though occasionally a little too febrile for this fare. Interpretatively, too, they’re only partly successful. The way you look tonight is projected with admirable sincerity but the Pavao’s sluggish tempo robs the song of its natural grace; the same could be said for Embraceable you. Their jaunty reading of Someone to watch over me, on the other hand, leaves precious little room for the tenderness this lovely song requires. Meanwhile, Ellington’s It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing is much too tightly wound – it jitters rather than swings. The Pavao are at their best in Let’s call the whole thing off where they capture the song’s wry character with elan. Still, this disc is a disappointment. For while the Pavao’s hearts may be in the right place, the true spirit of many of these songs clearly eludes them.
