There is exhilarating virtuosity here in abundance. From the very first track and the brilliant sextuplets of MacDowell's Witches' Dance, one is invited to be dazzled and it would be a churlish listener who failed to respond to this piece and to the rather similar displays in Schlozer's Etude in A flat and the Palmgren En route. Beyond feats of dexterity, Stephen Hough offers a demonstration of other skills that are less obviously technical but require equal mastery, for example in tone-colour and texture. Rubato is something else that this kind of piece needs, and for the most part it is done well here, though at times I feel it to be over the top and too close to kitsch, say in the Levitzki. Hough's own arrangements of two Roger Quilter songs and the Woodforde-Finden Kashmiri Song have a quiet charm and his version of Richard Rodgers's My favourite things is perky yet warm in just the right way too. I suspect that I should return more often to these than to some of the pieces in which sheer brilliance is the main feature though make no mistake, such things as the Schlozer and Dohnanyi's coruscating F minor Capriccio are splendidly done, and so is the Godowsky piece.
The recordings were made in two locations, one in London and the other in New York, but the piano sound—presumably of two different instruments matches up well and is excellent, with only a few forte bass notes seeming excessive tonally. Just one little quibble with the engineers: the studio ambience is faded too rapidly and suddenly after many of the pieces.'
