Author: Alan Blyth
Wolf isn't a composer with whom Price has been very much associated until now but in a group of the Morike settings, she proves herself at one with the poems and their music, catching in particular the restless ardour of Begegnung, the timeless mystery of Gesang Weylas, and the peculiarly Wolfian charm of the lighter pieces. Liszt is even more to her liking. She and Johnson choose the later, longer version of Freudvoll und leidvon and make a grand romantic statement of it that is just right. They are also gratefully expansive in Liszt's discursive setting of ''Kennst du das Land'', where Mignon's words are treated more cheerfully than by other composers.
The interpretation of the Wesendonk Lieder is the crowning glory of this wonderful recital. Flagstad, with Moore (HMV, 10/48 and 3/49—nla) and Tiana Lemnitz in 1944 (Acanta, 7/89) have shown in the past that this cycle works as well, if not better, in its piano-accompanied form as compared with its orchestral counterpart: the revolutionary nature of its chromaticism becomes all the more arresting with the barer accompaniments and the text that much more intimate and communing. These points are made manifest in this virtually faultless reading, speeds (no unwanted lingering), phrasing, line and tone ideally adapted to the words and music. Price knows all about the Tristan-esque mood of these songs, having been a memorable Isolde herself (on disc—DG, 11/86), and conveys all the hothouse mood of eroticism without ever overstating it. Johnson places the piano part in perfect relationship with the voice, helped by the exemplary recording of both. All one misses are notes from Johnson of a calibre to match the performances. Don't miss this rewarding issue.'
