Author:
To my mind, the first side (entitled ''The Catch Club'') is by far the better of the two. Most of the pieces are short, many have good tunes or entertaining canons, and there are some splendid texts. I could perhaps imagine a more engaging storyteller than David James in Ravenscroft's ballad, There were three ravens, and couldn't help feeling that the hummed accompaniment was more reminiscent of Peter Warlock than of the Jacobean world. Elsewhere, however, the style is exactly right, not least in the (predictable) group of smutty songs—ones that the BBC would ban from Radio 1, though I expect that their antiquity will render them acceptable to Radio 3! Never has Purcell's Sir Walter enjoying his damsel sounded better than here; and was it pure chance that my stylus stuck in a groove at the climax of this spirited performance of the (understandably) anonymous Inigo Jones? By comparison, Side 2 ( ''The Glee Club'') is unexciting—unless, of course, you care for the sugary sweetness of nineteenth-century parlour songs. Several with more than one stanza rather outstay their welcome, while others (such as Arne's Elegy) are uneven in quality.
As always, the ensemble's collective virtuosity and tuning are impeccable, and there is a great deal of good humour in the performances. The level of commitment does however vary from singer to singer, and I can't help feeling that the strength of the Hilliard Ensemble's performances here can be attributed largely to the contribution of the lower voices, especially the tenors, several of whom are excellent actors. This slight uneveness distinguishes the Hilliard Ensemble from their most obvious competitors (and the Red Arrows of this repertory), the King's Singers. After hearing this present record, you may agree that certain members of the ensemble still have a few lessons to learn from the older group.'
