Time stands still, it is we who change. Old age is the time for contemplation and reconciliation, marked in Dowland's settings of Sir Henry Lea's His golden locks time hath to silver turnd and Farre from triumphing court. Worldly pleasures are transient diversions on our way to the thereafter, but why not enjoy them while we may? The latter thought's potential as a tool of seduction was recognized in Rosseter's What then is love but mourning? and in the delightful anonymous chanson Mignonne allons, are clearly as (albeit brutally to the point) in Tom Lehrer's When you are old and grey, 350 years later. Equally 'timeless' are the thoughts in Campion's Though you are yoong and I am olde (death can come at any age) and Come, chearful day (one more, one less). It is an excellent thematic idea, declared by the artists themselves to be one of their favourites.
Emma Kirkby's voice is a well-nigh perfect musical instrument, unfailing and unwavering in pitch, dynamically controlled, of exceptional purity and with the benefit of diction that renders the printed texts (on a separate insert) superfluous—other than to reveal small differences between them and what is sung. Yet I cannot escape the feeling that a wider emotional range is called for than is expressed. I yield to no one in my admiration for Kirkby's art but I remain largely unconvinced by such a 'sanitized' approach to this material. This is not to say that there is no expressive range here; there is, but it could be greater without becoming operatic—Pears and Bream showed the way and, 'authentic' or not, it is more eloquent. The voice is sensitively abated on the final word of ''my limbs grow faint'' but a crescendo on the second of ''thy fading light'' makes no discernible sense. Nevertheless, there will be many who will disagree, including, it seems, the enthusiastic audience that intrudes only at the very end.
The lute accompaniments are restrained but effective, recorded in better balance that has sometimes been the case with this partnership, and the two lute solos provide suitable punctuation. Within its own, clearly set parameters this is a fine recital that adds a few welcome items to the recorded repertory of lute-song, engineered close to perfection.'
