Famously bought cheaply at auction as part of a job lot by a Belgian art dealer who thought only a year later that it would be a good idea to ask a musician if it was of any interest, the Leuven Chansonnier of the 1470s is one of the most perfectly preserved songbooks of its time. And of course it fuelled a new interest in the repertory: Ensemble Sollazzo have already issued two CDs of a planned complete recording; and now Ensemble Leones offer all of the previously unknown songs together with a selection of other songs with interesting new readings. So Leones have trumped Sollazzo by packing all the novelty together in one disc. And it is easy to say that Sollazzo are more resourceful, with some speeds that seem insanely fast or slow (but often prove mesmerising) and dramatic changes of scoring, whereas Leones keep to more sane approaches.

Both groups use rather more singers and instrumentalists than has been normal in the past few years. Leones line up six singers for Frye’s Ave regina celorum and Binchois’s Comme femme desconfortée and have these plus three instrumentalists for the new Oublie, oublie (stunningly successful) and Donnez l’aumosne. But perhaps the outstanding track here is Jacob Lawrence’s energetic singing of Caron’s Cent mille escuz with a previously unknown text stanza. The disc puts a triumphant cap on a few years of seriously marvellous issues of 15th-century songs. It comes with a lucid and informative booklet note by Gramophone’s Fabrice Fitch.
