The Capriccio of Ponchielli has lots of decorative passagework, and invites and receives the most stylish bravura from the soloist. But although jaunty, it is melodically rather vapid. The Petite piece of Georges Hue has more distinction and a gentle charm, and Paladilhe’s Solo (not in fact a solo but a duo) is agreeable too, as is the Kalliwoda Morceau, although it is a shade long. When we come to Pasculli’s skilful fantasia on Donizetti’s La Favorita, the tunes are more indelible, and the (considerable) virtuosity it demands is met with aplomb. Donizetti’s own Solo is another attractive morsel, as is the lilting Franck Piece, but the far greater substance of the Drei Romanzen by Schumann, the highlight of the programme, comes over in bold relief. However, Sinigaglia’s amiable Variations make for an engaging finale.
John Anderson is a splendid soloist and is well supported throughout by Gordon Back. The balance is very real and successful. But with such slight material, this 75-minute concert needs to be dipped into, rather than taken all at once.'
