Here are 32 songs by Peter Warlock, ranging from The Wind from the West, composed when he was 17, to The Fox, his last original composition before his tragic and still mysterious death. A mysterious composer, too: schizophrenia reflected in music if ever one heard it, the jolly, mock-Elizabethan, 'hey diddle, ho diddle, do' side of him contrasted with the dark melancholia of a song like Late Summer. I am in no doubt which Warlock I prefer. The insistent rumbustiousness quickly becomes wearisome, though of course one could scarcely fail to enjoy Captain Stratton's Fancy and Yarmouth Fair. The setting of J. C. Squire's Mr Belloc's Fancy, however, seems to me to be the essence of what can only be described as 'twee'.
Luxon is in excellent voice throughout the recital (recorded in the Snape Maltings), except in the first song, The Wind from the West, where he sounds constricted and hard. A pity, because it is an attractive song. Thereafter, with scintillating accompaniments by David Willison (and sensitive, too, in the lovely postlude of Late Summer), he brings all his interpretative powers to bear on this demanding programme. How persuasive he is in As ever I saw, how dramatic in Play Acting, a strange and uncharacteristic song in which he wisely does not attempt the north-eastern dialect (just the thing for Thomas Allen). The macabre side of Warlock surfaces again in The Fox, a song that Britten might have written in his Our Hunting Fathers mood. Incidentally, Warlock's Whenas the rye is a setting of the same Peele poem used by Britten in his Spring Symphony (with the line about ''strawberries swimming in the cream'').
A very recommendable disc, then, splendidly recorded, and nicely mixing the familiar with the rare. It includes the first recording of the three Belloc songs, two settings of There is a Lady and a remarkable setting of Autumn Twilight by Arthur Symons, with harmonies in the accompaniment that just might have come from Vienna (Second School). All the texts are supplied, but the wrong stanza from Fletcher's Sleep has been printed.'
