This recording mirrors the courtly lives of the Italian Renaissance nobility. The ensemble from Brittany – named after the Breton composer who served Ercole Cardinal Gonzaga in Mantua – is joined by the soprano Anne Mangouët. Les Sacqueboutiers de Toulouse open the recital with Inclite…, a spirited piece by Jacquet’s Flemish friend and contemporary Willaert, honouring Duke Francesco Sforza. Singers and instrumentalists perform together in the Missa Enceladi, in the motet Hesperiae ultimae invicto Regi (marking a state visit by Philip II of Spain), and in both psalms which end the programme.
The Mass – parodying Jacquet’s motet of the same name, which salutes the Gonzagas and their marvellous horses – is a model of Counter-Reformation composition. We first hear the singers alone in that early motet, sounding strikingly sweet and gentle after the noble state visit motet that precedes it. As for the Mass itself, I have one query: why the intonation of Credo III, probably only available from the 17th century? The usual Credo I intonation was equally suitable, its first two notes being identical with those of the theme.
