Author: Adrian Edwards
This musical version of the Hecht/MacArthur play, The Front Page, was commissioned by the late Louis Benjamin and Toby Rowland for the Stoll Moss theatre chain in London's West End, where it opened in the summer of 1982. It was an enterprising move but one that didn't pay off either in artistic or commercial terms as this original-cast recording testifies.
There could yet be a good musical to be written from this source and it would start with a score that wasn't aiming so low. The early digital recording sounds excellent in this format, but it's to little avail in the circumstances.'
