I no longer possess a copy of either original but have the Sibelius in a later 1972 LP pressing. The merits of both performances are well known: Szell's readings are admirably taut and well held together; they have splendid tension and power. I can't say that I find the digital remastering a great improvement over the LP. True, there is a firmer and deeper bass but the string sonority is drier. For example, one has to go no further than the string exclamation in the first movement (five bars before letter B) to find a disturbing dryness. The sound seems to be cut off rather than dying away as it does on LP, and there is some considerable loss of bloom. Memory can, of course, deceive but I don't recall Szell's Fifth Symphony sounding quite so aggressive and unpleasant.'
