The double-sided 78rpm was perfect for this sort of repertory, and indeed for a singer of Kullman’s qualities. Limpid tone, excellent diction, but a somewhat uniform approach to all the songs, very sentimental, without the imagination of his contemporaries, Tauber, Gigli or even Crooks.
Kullman, who was born in Connecticut in 1903, studied with Schon-Rene, who was also one of Paul Robeson’s teachers. He sang for Klemperer at the Kroll Opera in Berlin, where he made his debut in a performance of Butterfly, opposite Novotna, and conducted by Zemlinsky. All the sides gathered here were recorded in Berlin and London, between 1932 and 1938, with some impressive conductors, including Walter Goehr and Sir Malcolm Sargent.
The most interesting item is a performance of Mahler’s “Ich atmet’ einem linden Duft” from the Ruckert-Lieder. It is in English, an uncredited translation – which Peter Dempsey in his informative notes says has been impossible to identify – “I breathed the breath of blossoms red”. The combination of Kullman and Sargent somehow makes it sound like Gounod, but it must have been an adventurous choice, even in 1938. Kullman had been the tenor soloist in Bruno Walter’s 1936 Columbia recording of Das Lied von der Erde (Music & Arts and Pearl, 12/93), and in 1935 he had made his Metropolitan debut as Gounod’s Faust. He sang there every season until his retirement in 1962. He was Don Jose to Ponselle’s Carmen and an account of the Flower song, recorded in 1932, suggests that early in his career he had a cleaner, less lachrymose style.
Among the lighter items, he is especially good in two songs which were associated with Cavan O’Connor, namely Posford’s The world is mine tonight and Kunneke’s “I’m only a strolling vagabond” (from the English version of Die Vetter aus Dingsda). A lot of these songs are rarities now, so the repertory is as interesting as the performances, especially if you have a sweet tooth.'
