Nimbus are wrong in labelling this Debussy disc ''chansons'': like some others, they seem not to appreciate that this is a light-music term, and that French art songs are ''melodies''. That said, there is not much else to cavil at here. Cuenod, already 70 when he made these recordings (my mention of 75 in the initial 1980 review was based on mis-information on the date of the sessions), shows only few signs of his age: his voice is light (as always) but steady, his control of long phrases unimpaired, and his use of words imaginative as well as crystal clear: one regrets only his occasional singing on the underside of notes (e.g. in Le jet d'eau) and some lack of fullness in the high register (but listen to the intensity of his Mort des amants). His sense of style in this varied collection, ranging from the romantic Nuit d'etoiles (composed at the age of 14) to the extremely elusive songs Mallarme songs of 37 years later, reveals true musicianly insight; and his artistry is matched by Martin Isepp's sympathetic and sensitive partnership. Excellent recording quality adds to the attraction of this disc: sample L'ombre des arbres and see if you aren't impelled to hear the rest.'
