Here are riches. 'Elgar's Choral Songs' is a wide term, embracing part-songs, unison songs and those for male voices. The packaging says ''complete'', but this isn't strictly true. The Angelus is not here, for example, and the Scenes from the Bavarian Highlands would have needed to be included to justify the claim. Never mind, Hyperion have given us the bulk of Elgar's compositions in this genre, ranging from My Love Dwelt in a Northern Land of 1889 and the domesticities of O Happy Eyes to the charming unison pieces written for boys' voices in 1933. The part-songs written for festival competitions, such as the exquisite Evening Scene and the Four Part-songs of Op. 53, are challenging and imaginative. ''Owls'', the last of the Op. 53 set, is an eerie and extraordinary masterpiece, with words by Elgar. What gave rise to them, with their obsessive refrain of ''dead at the foot of the tree''?
Then there are Go, Song of mine, the greatest of his works in this genre, and the Opp. 71, 72 and 73 part-songs of 1914, ranging from the picturesque The Shower and the elaborate The Fountain to the sombre power of Death on the Hills and the haunting, wistful Serenade. What do they know of Elgar who only his orchestral works know? Even for ardent Elgarians there will be novelties and discoveries in this collection, the entrancing A Christmas Greeting, for example, sent from Italy to G. R. S.'s Hereford choristers in 1907 and movingly quoting the ''Pastoral Symphony'' from Messiah on the two violins.
One could not hope for a recording stronger in local associations. Sponsored partly by the Elgar Foundation, it was made in the Chapter House, Worcester, and the songs are divided between two choirs—Worcester Cathedral Choir and the Donald Hunt Singers—conducted by that devoted Elgarian, Dr Donald Hunt, organist of Worcester Cathedral. Very good they are, too, sustaining a bright and sensitive tone over the whole long programme and with exemplary diction. The attack and intonation, for instance, at the start of ''O Wild West Wind'' (Five Part-songs Op. 45) are splendid to hear. Occasionally tempos seem rather staid and one could have indulged a few interpretative risks. Keith Swallow is the alert pianist and Jeremy Ballard and Robin Thurlby the violinists. The recording is well balanced, sometimes a little dry and not specially kind to violin tone. On CD there is the inestimable advantage of being able to select one's own programme and order of the songs.'
